With the ZT230 discontinued, lines that had grown used to it need a successor. The ZT231 is the model Zebra put in that slot. The body is narrower, the footprint smaller, and the industrial build is intact.
What matters when swapping
Two things go wrong when changing models: the media no longer fits, or the accessories do not carry over. The ZT231 keeps the ZT230's media specifications, so existing label rolls, ribbon rolls and printhead spares stay in use with no re-stocking. Systems already running ZPL templates need no changes either, since the command set is the same.
On performance, the 203 dpi version reaches 8 ips and the 300 dpi version 12 ips, up to 305 mm/s, with a 104 mm print width. Processing and connectivity have moved up from the ZT230. Link-OS allows remote diagnostics and firmware updates, so a fleet can be managed centrally instead of visited one machine at a time.
Wireless is the practical option
Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth are both optional. Cabling is usually the slow part of a line change: move a workstation and the network run has to be redone. Wireless removes that step, and for mobile stations, temporary lines or trade shows it is often the only workable choice.
Right-sized for the job
Station-level printing in electronics assembly, device and consumable labels in medical, packaging and traceability labels in light manufacturing, specimen labels in labs. Volumes run from dozens to a few hundred a day, and the requirement is steadiness rather than throughput.
Consumables follow the stock: coated paper with wax or hybrid ribbon, synthetic with hybrid, PET and solvent-resistant work with resin. Huaishi produces both labels and ribbon, so during commissioning we test with matched media instead of leaving an unknown ribbon to take the blame.
