Plenty of labelling jobs stall on width. GHS chemical labels, tyre sidewall traceability marks, pallet and container unit IDs: none fit a 4-inch (104 mm) machine, so they get printed in two pieces or sent out. The ZT421 prints up to 168 mm (6.6 in), which puts that work back on the shop floor.
Speed at full width
The usual complaint about wide-format machines is that width costs speed. The ZT421 holds 12 ips (305 mm/s) at 168 mm, enough to keep up with a shift's output. Resolution is 203 or 300 dpi. Large labels rarely need fine detail, so 300 dpi covers most, and finer text pushes you toward the 600 dpi of a ZT610.
What compliance labels actually demand
Chemical and hazardous goods labelling has fixed content requirements: GHS pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, supplier details. One version fills a lot of area, and these labels sit in warehouses or outdoors for years, so the stock has to resist light and moisture.
Match the ribbon to the job. Wide labels are usually synthetic paper or PET. Hybrid ribbon handles transport and storage duty; resin ribbon is the choice for long outdoor exposure or chemical contact. Ribbon width has to cover the label: a 168 mm label needs roughly 170 mm ribbon, and the standard 110 mm roll will not do, so confirm this at the order stage.
Interface and operation
A 4.3-inch colour touchscreen, with USB 2.0, RS-232, Ethernet, Bluetooth 4.1 and dual USB host, the same set as the ZT411. Two machines from the same family run the same way, so a shop floor using both does not double its training.
Common questions
How wide can it print? 168 mm (6.6 in). Beyond that, look at the 220Xi4 class or print in panels.
Can it print colour GHS labels? Thermal transfer is single-colour. Two-colour GHS labels are done with pre-printed stock and the black information layer printed on top. We build that combination regularly.
